Stories from the shop

The barbecue, from Saint Mark's Day to Ferragosto

The shop's salsiccia and wurstel on the grill, from 25 April to Ferragosto: what to put on the fire, how much you need, when to book and collect.

For many people the grilling season starts on 25 April, Saint Mark's Day, and runs until Ferragosto (15 August), by way of 1 May and 2 June; some start even earlier, on Easter Monday. It's a passion all over Italy: according to a Coldiretti/Ixè survey from summer 2025, in the warm months eight Italians out of ten have at least one barbecue, and in 63% of cases it's meat (AGI).

We've already told you how to cook salsiccia and wurstel in In the pan or on the griddle. Here we talk about the holiday itself: what to bring, how much, and when to come by.

What to put on the grill

The star is the salsiccia fresca, the luganega: you buy it fresh and cook it at home. Alongside it, the shop's wurstel, which we make ourselves from pork, and which on the grill do just as well as the salsiccia. Around them, toasted polenta, vegetables from the garden (peppers, aubergines, courgettes) and bread.

How much you need

It depends on how many of you there are and on what else goes on the grill. As a rule, if there's other meat too, count on about two hundred grams a head between salsiccia and wurstel; if it's just them, a little more. If you're unsure, tell us when you book: how many you are, and who has the biggest appetite.

Book a few days ahead

We make salsiccia and wurstel only a few pieces at a time. Before a holiday, book them a few days ahead on WhatsApp or by phone: we'll tell you straight away whether there will be some for that day. How to book is explained on the How to buy page.

We're closed on holidays

On 25 April, 1 May, 2 June and on Ferragosto the shop is closed. Book and come by the day before; if we're closed the day before too, the last day we're open. The opening hours are on the Hours and address page. At home, keep the salsiccia and wurstel in the fridge until the grill is ready.

To find out what's in today, look at “In the shop today” on the home page. If the salsiccia or the wurstel aren't in, leave your mobile number with “Notify me” on their page: we'll message you when they're back.
